FAQ

  • Q What is hexamine used for?

    A
Medical uses. As the mandelic acid salt (generic methenamine mandelate, USP) it is used for the treatment of urinary tract infection. It decomposes at an acidic pH to form formaldehyde and ammonia, and the formaldehyde is bactericidal; the mandelic acid adds to this effect.

  • Q Is hexamine toxic?

    A
In an acid environment hexamine is converted to toxic formaldehyde, which is their main hazard for toxicity by ingestion.

  • Q What is nitrite used for?

A Sodium nitrate should not be confused with sodium nitrite, which is also a commonfood additive and preservative used, for example, in deli meats. Less common applications include as an oxidizer in fireworks, replacing potassium nitrate commonly found in black powder, and as a component in instant cold packs.
  • Q Is Sodium Nitrite a base?

    A
Sodium nitrite, NaNO2, is a base. Because it is an ionic compound, it contains an anion. Because the anion nitrite, NO2-, is not on the list of neutral or acidic anions, it isbasic. The only common strong base anion is hydroxide, so compounds containing thenitrite ion must be weak bases.

  • Q Is sodium nitrite bad for you?

A The preservative sodium nitrite fights harmful bacteria in ham, salami and other processed and cured meats and also lends them their pink coloration. However, under certain conditions in the human body, nitrite can damage cells and also morph into molecules that cause cancer.
